How to read the calendar

Impact

High-impact releases (red) regularly move a currency by 50–100 pips within minutes: rate decisions, inflation, employment and GDP. Medium (amber) can move markets when the surprise is large. Low (grey) rarely matters outside quiet sessions.

Actual vs forecast

Markets price in the forecast before the release, so the move depends on the surprise — the gap between actual and forecast — not on whether the number is good or bad in isolation. A large miss in either direction is what creates volatility.

Previous

The prior reading. Revisions to the previous figure are published alongside the new number and can matter as much as the headline, especially for jobs data.

Timezone

Times are converted to the timezone you pick. Note that the US and Europe switch daylight-saving time on different dates in March and October/November, which shifts the usual release hours by an hour for a couple of weeks.

Releases that move the market most

These are the events that produce the largest, most tradable moves in forex, gold and stock-index CFDs.

Central-bank rate decisions (FOMC, ECB, BoE, BoJ)

The single biggest driver. The statement and press conference often move markets more than the decision itself.

Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP)

US jobs report on the first Friday of the month at 8:30 ET. Watch the headline, unemployment rate and average hourly earnings together.

Consumer Price Index (CPI)

The inflation print that shapes rate expectations. Core CPI (excluding food and energy) is what central banks watch.

GDP

Quarterly growth. The advance estimate moves markets most; later revisions rarely do.

PMI surveys

Forward-looking activity gauges for manufacturing and services. A reading below 50 signals contraction.

Retail sales and unemployment claims

Weekly and monthly demand and labour indicators that fine-tune rate expectations between the big releases.

How to trade around high-impact news

  1. 1

    Before: know the setup

Check what is priced in — the forecast and recent trend — and decide in advance whether you are trading the release or standing aside. Spreads widen and stops can slip in the seconds around the print, so reduce position size or close ahead of it.

  2. 2

During: let the first move finish

The first 1–3 minutes are dominated by algorithms reacting to the headline. Retail traders get better fills waiting for the initial spike to settle and trading the follow-through or the reversal once direction is clear.

  3. 3

    After: trade the narrative

The lasting move comes from how the release changes rate expectations. If the surprise reinforces the existing trend, continuation setups over the next hours tend to work better than fading the move.

Frequently asked questions

What is a forex economic calendar?

A schedule of the economic data releases, central-bank meetings and speeches that affect currency prices, listed with the expected (forecast) and previous values so traders can anticipate volatility and compare the actual figure when it lands.

How often is the calendar updated?

The schedule and forecasts refresh every 30 minutes, and actual figures appear shortly after each release. The page shows the time of the last refresh at the bottom of the calendar.

Which events should beginners watch?

Start with the high-impact releases for the currencies you trade: rate decisions, CPI, NFP for the US dollar, and GDP. Learning how a pair behaves around these few events teaches more than following every low-impact print.

Why do prices sometimes move before the release?

Positioning ahead of the print, leaks in related data (for example private payroll surveys before NFP) and thin liquidity as market makers pull quotes all cause moves in the minutes before a major number.

Do brokers restrict trading around news?

Some brokers widen spreads sharply or raise margin requirements around high-impact releases, and many prop firms prohibit opening trades in the minutes around them. Check the rules on the broker or prop-firm review page before trading news.
