What is pip value?
A pip is the standard unit of price movement in forex: 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for pairs quoted in Japanese yen. Pip value is what that one-pip move is worth in money for a given position size, expressed in your account currency. It is the bridge between a price chart and your profit and loss.
Pip value depends on three things: the pair (its pip size and contract size), the number of lots you trade, and the exchange rate between the quote currency and your account currency. For a USD account trading EURUSD it is a fixed $10 per standard lot; for USDJPY or a EUR account it moves with the market, which is why a calculator is useful.
How to use the pip calculator
Select the currency pair or metal
Pick from majors, crosses, gold and silver. The pip size and contract size are filled in from standard broker specifications.
Choose your account currency
The result is converted into this currency. If it matches the quote currency of the pair, no conversion is needed.
Enter the lot size
Type the position size in lots — 1.00 for a standard lot, 0.10 for a mini lot, 0.01 for a micro lot.
Add the current price or cross rate
Pairs where the account currency is the base currency need the current price; other combinations need the cross rate between the quote currency and your account currency.
Read the pip value
You get the value of one pip for your position and for one standard lot. Multiply by your stop distance to know the money at risk.
Pip value formula
Pip value = Pip size × Contract size × Lots × (Quote currency → Account currency rate)Example: 1 standard lot of EURUSD on a USD account: 0.0001 × 100,000 × 1 × 1 = $10 per pip. For 1 lot of USDJPY at 150.00: 0.01 × 100,000 = ¥1,000 per pip, which is ¥1,000 ÷ 150 = $6.67. For 0.10 lot of GBPUSD the value is $1 per pip.
Pip value tips
- For any pair quoted in your account currency (XXX/USD on a USD account) the pip value is fixed: $10, $1 and $0.10 for standard, mini and micro lots.
- JPY pairs count 0.01 as a pip, so a move from 150.00 to 150.50 is 50 pips, not 5.
- Many brokers display a fifth decimal (a pipette or point). Ten points make one pip; do not confuse the two when setting stops.
- Recheck pip values for cross pairs before big news — a 3% move in the quote currency changes the value of every pip you have at risk.
Pip value FAQ
How much is 1 pip worth on EURUSD?
For a USD account, $10 per standard lot, $1 per mini lot and $0.10 per micro lot. On a EUR account divide by the EURUSD rate: at 1.1000 one pip on a standard lot is about €9.09.
What is 1 pip worth on gold?
With the common 100-ounce contract and 0.01 counted as one pip, a pip on XAUUSD is worth $1 per standard lot. Brokers that treat 0.10 as a pip show $10; the calculator makes the convention explicit.
How many pips is a pipette?
A pipette, or point, is one tenth of a pip — the fifth decimal on most pairs and the third decimal on JPY pairs. A quote moving from 1.10000 to 1.10015 has moved 1.5 pips.
Why does pip value change on USDJPY?
The pip is fixed in yen (¥1,000 per lot), but a USD account measures results in dollars, so the pip value is ¥1,000 divided by the current USDJPY rate. At 140 it is $7.14; at 160 it is $6.25.
What is the pip value for a 0.01 lot?
A micro lot (0.01) is 1,000 units. On EURUSD that is $0.10 per pip, so a 30-pip stop risks $3. It is the smallest size most brokers offer and ideal for testing a strategy live.
Is pip value the same as spread cost?
No, but they are linked. The spread is quoted in pips; multiply it by the pip value to see the cost of opening a trade in money. A 1.2-pip spread on one standard lot of EURUSD costs $12.
