Forex market sessions
The forex market runs around the clock, but liquidity and volatility follow the major sessions. This clock shows which sessions are open right now, when the next opens or closes, and the overlaps where the most volume trades — all converted to your local time.

How to read the clock
The dial is one full day in the selected time zone, midnight at the top and noon at the bottom. Each ring is a session — Sydney on the outside, then Tokyo, London and New York — and the coloured arc marks its opening hours. Where two arcs share the same hours, the inner ring lights up: that is an overlap, when two centres trade at once and spreads are usually tightest. The hand shows the current time; use the selector to view the same schedule in another zone.

What are the forex market sessions?
The forex market trades 24 hours a day from Monday morning in Sydney to Friday evening in New York, but activity is not spread evenly. It follows the business hours of four financial centres: Sydney (roughly 22:00–07:00 UTC), Tokyo (00:00–09:00 UTC), London (08:00–17:00 UTC) and New York (13:00–22:00 UTC). Together these are the Asian, European and North American sessions.
Where two sessions overlap, two centres are trading at once and volume, volatility and liquidity peak — spreads are tightest and moves are cleanest. The London–New York overlap between 13:00 and 17:00 UTC is the busiest window of the day and the time most major economic releases are published. This clock converts all of it into your own time zone.
How to use the market hours clock
Pick your time zone
The dial defaults to your device time; choose another zone to see the same schedule from a different city.
Read the rings
Each ring is a session — Sydney on the outside, then Tokyo, London and New York. The coloured arc marks its opening hours; the hand shows the current time.
Look for overlaps
Where two arcs cover the same hours, the inner ring lights up. Those are the overlap periods where spreads are usually tightest and trends most reliable.
Check the countdown and today's events
Under the dial you see how long until the next session opens or closes and today's high-impact economic releases, so you are not caught by a scheduled spike.
Why trading sessions matter
Each session has its own character. Asia is calm and range-bound, with yen and Australian dollar pairs most active. London brings the day's first big moves and sets the direction for euro and sterling pairs. New York adds the US dollar flows and the biggest data releases, and the London close often produces reversals as European desks square positions.
Trading the wrong pair at the wrong hour is a hidden cost: EURUSD at 03:00 UTC may have double the spread it shows at 14:00 UTC, and a breakout strategy that works during London will generate false signals during the Asian range. Timing your strategy to the session it suits is one of the cheapest edges available.
Session timing tips
- Trade EURUSD, GBPUSD and USDCHF during London and the London–New York overlap; trade AUDUSD, NZDUSD and USDJPY when Tokyo and Sydney are open.
- Session hours shift by an hour when the US and Europe change to and from daylight-saving time on different dates in March and October/November.
- Avoid opening positions in the rollover hour around 22:00 UTC when liquidity is lowest and spreads widen; swap is charged at that time too.
- Combine the clock with the economic calendar: a red-flag release during an overlap produces the largest moves of the week.
Forex market hours FAQ
When is the forex market most active?
During the London–New York overlap, roughly 13:00–17:00 UTC (8 am–12 pm New York, 1–5 pm London). Both of the largest centres are trading and most US and European data is released in this window.
What time does the forex market open and close?
The week opens with Sydney at about 22:00 UTC on Sunday (Monday morning local time) and closes with New York at 22:00 UTC on Friday. Between those points the market is open around the clock.
Which pairs are best during the Asian session?
Pairs involving the yen, Australian and New Zealand dollars — USDJPY, AUDUSD, NZDUSD, AUDJPY — see their best liquidity. European and US pairs tend to stay in narrow ranges until London opens.
Is the forex market open on weekends?
No. Interbank forex trading is closed from the New York close on Friday until Sydney opens on Monday morning. Some brokers offer weekend prices on crypto or synthetic instruments only.
What is the London open and why does it matter?
London opens at 08:00 UTC (07:00 UTC during British Summer Time) and handles the largest share of global forex volume. The first hour usually sets the day's range and breaks the Asian range on the euro and sterling pairs.
How does daylight-saving time affect forex sessions?
The US and the UK/Europe switch on different dates, so for two to three weeks in March and again in October or November the New York and London sessions are one hour closer together or further apart than usual, which shifts the overlap window.
